Eletronuclear’s actions, directed to the communities settled in the area around the Angra Nuclear Plant, aim at sharing the results attained by the Company with these communities, thus encouraging the economic, social and cultural development of the region and raising its awareness of sustainable development principles.
A number of projects aimed at improving healthcare, education and environmental preservation conditions is being developed by Eletronuclear in the area. On the other hand, financial support agreements established with the Administrations of Angra dos Reis and Paraty municipalities provide the resources needed to improve local medical facilities, school buildings, fire brigades and roads, as well as to restore and repair the many old historical buildings to be found in the area.
Since it was created in 1999, the Eletronuclear Healthcare Foundation has been in charge of the Praia Brava Hospital. Built in the early 70’s to care for the Company’s and contractors’ personnel and their families, nowadays 90 % of the Hospital’s activities, involving more than 60,000 annual emergency cases, medical appointments, births and surgeries come from the local communities. In the same manner, 40 % of the students that attend the schools built and partially supported by the Company in its residential villages of Praia Brava and Mambucaba come from families that don’t have any direct connection with Eletronuclear.
In the area of environment preservation, Eletronuclear has been leading many local initiatives, such as the implementation of a Management Plan for the Tamoios Ecological Station, the Green Belt Project and the construction of a Center for Environmental Studies at Praia da Chácara, in Angra dos Reis, as well as providing support to sustainable development projects such as the Marine Life Program of the Institute for Eco-Development of the Ilha Grande Bay and promoting several research studies and joint ventures with Universities.
In order to uphold local traditions and cultural traits, Eletronuclear has been promoting exhibitions of local artists and other popular events, as well as supporting the publication of books having a special significance for the region. Specific attention is given to the remnants of native Indian populations living in the area, which receive support according to their needs and requirements.
